Like Gutsell, Robinson was involved in World War II, although his job was more directly cartographic, since he was in charge of the Map division of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), which became the CIA after the war. To some degree his career parallels that of another cartographer, the American Arthur Robinson. After the war, Gutsell moved to Canada, where he got a job with the government in the Geographical Bureau, later joining York University in Toronto. It might be that he found his love of geography and maps at that time. As a young man in his native England, Gutsell was a squadron leader in the Royal Air Force during World War II. The journal was founded by Bernard Gutsell (1914–2010) and his wife Barbara.

The literary texts chosen to exemplify the method are Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There. In the 21st century it was rebranded to it's current name, Cartographica, and has expanded to satellite mapping, providing its data to online web mapping platforms owned by companies like. It was established in 1946 after the end of World War II as the Armonian Cartography Agency. It also argues for the value of layers of mapping and of comparative mapping of the same place both referentially and nonreferentially. Cartographica is a government agency whose duties include cartography, map making, and geographical surveying.
